A few months back my wife introduced the kids and me to the Kindness Rocks Project.  The purpose is to spread kind messages that are painted on rocks and placed throughout a city, park, beach or wherever really.

Everyone knows the old saying that “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”  Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth!  I really believe that how and what you say to someone one can have profound effects on them for the rest of their lives.  That is a very powerful thing to think about.

Imagine you are discouraged or depressed and you find yourself strolling through a park and stumble upon a rock that says “you matter!” or “never give up!”  What started out as a simple idea has spread all over the world.  It really is an amazing and fun project!

Everyone should participate in the Kindness Rocks Project!

This is one of the best family activities you can do because you can be active outside with your family, teach kids a powerful lesson about kindness and then have lots of fun spreading the message.  One of the coolest things was that after hiding the rocks, we walked back down the same path where the rocks were hidden and people were starting to find them.  You could see how excited they were and the smiles on their faces.

Here are some tips that helped us.

  • Get rocks that are smooth or flat if possible.
  • Use acrylic paint so it doesn’t wash off.
  • Write the words with a sharpie after the paint has dried.
  • Use a sealer for extra protection.
  • Make sure the rocks aren’t too hard to find.
