I’m going to say right off the bat. Every couple should do the Goodwill Date! A while back I did a post on 12 dates that are better than dinner and a movie. And one of those was the Goodwill Date. My wife had hinted to me that we should try it, so we went for it.
The rules are simple.
- Find a local Goodwill store.Â
- You each get $10 each to spend on each others outfit.Â
- You get to choose what they wear.Â
- Choose fake names for each other and go by them for the whole date.                               Â
To add to the fun, we took our kids along. I have never shopped for women’s clothes, so I was pretty lost. When all was said and done, I had picked out one pair of pants and 10 tops, one of which I called the “Michael Jackson’s Wife” jacket. She ended up looking like the wife of a mafia boss who was going for a jog.

My wife picked out some gold, silk pants that were 5 inches too long for me. But what did me in was the sombrero. It really didn’t matter what outfit she picked out, I was told I would be wearing the sombrero no matter what. Â
We went out to eat and then a movie with a short stop at Walmart. And all of a sudden, the usual dinner and a movie was very exciting and hilarious! It’s funny how people tried to act normal when they saw us. But out of the corner of my eye, I could see some of them laughing. Â
Afterward, I realized that every couple should do the Goodwill Date and here’s why.
The Goodwill Date gets you out of your comfort zone so much to the point that you don’t care what other people think. This makes room for a couple of things. First, you and your significant other are in this together so it somehow makes you feel closer. And since you are in it together, you focus more on each other.Â
Another great thing is that you laugh. Man, we laughed so much. It’s hard to have a bad date when you’re laughing. The Goodwill Date also showed our kids that their parents love each other and make an effort to go out on dates even if they involve a sombrero.
So to everyone married or dating, if your dates have been a little boring, then do the Goodwill Date. I promise it will not disappoint.
This is hilarious! I’ll never forget the first time someone told me about this and I told my husband we were going to do it – he caved and ended up having a blast. I think you should start a Facebook page for Goodwill Dates just to see all the pictures!
Thank you! I never thought of starting a fb group. Good idea!
